Harvey Kurtzman, Parody, Satire, and Native Americans: Another Chapter in the History of Racialized Representation in the Americas

I am a huge fan of Harvey Kurtzman's work--especially the work he did on the early Mad comic book with Will Elder. Here, however, is something different. Kurtzman, disguised as "Remuda Charlie Stringer", edited an issue of FAVORITE WESTERNS OF FILMLAND for Warren Publications.... the full post is here.

Most interesting for the purposes on this blog are the Native American representations, send-ups, and gags in the issue; here are three of them:

and, just for Tex[t]-Mex sake, a "Mexican"...

...and, for eyegiene, a camera...

Thursday, April 28th @ 6:30 | Tex[t]-Mex and "Mextasy" Invading the Fullerton Public Library ~ Gustavo Arellano and William Nericcio, LIVE!

am really excited to announce that Mextasy, fresh back from an exhibition at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, is now booked to open for a limited one-day engagement at the Fullerton Public Library (co-sponsored by CSUF's ultra-rad Chicana/o Studies Department) where I will be giving a talk with Gustavo Arellano, everyone's favorite Ask A Mexican and the editor of the outrageously hip/current/progressive OC Weekly.  Come on out for the show and the exhibition--there will be readings from Tex[t]-Mex, Q & A with Gustavo and myself (¡lucha libre!), book-signings, and the exhibition--a rogues' gallery of scandalous graphic "Mexican" representations. Salma Hayek and Eva Longoria (along with Guy Ecker) are rumored to be coming for the gala, so make sure you are ready to brave the crowds.* It's free and open to the public.  Órale...

*OK, I started the rumor and its not true!

Free Jolito

Jolito is undoubtedly so Mexican, that he's a bean: literally.

Like many Mexicans in search of a better life, Jolito crosses the border to the United States illegally, and, afterward, his cinematic memoir becomes a story of the temptations the American Dream bring him as he begins to suffer an identity crisis. He even turns into a Border Patrol officer and has to convince he's American when he's about to be deported.

In Spanish with Spanish subtitles for the English...

UPDATE: This short is written and directed by Marcos Bucay and La Gran Royal, a Mexican comedy sketch portal. More videos are available on their website.

20th Century Mammy in DC Comics | Repost off the Cool Sequential Crush Blog...

Ximena Sariñana

Blogger Cruz Medina left a comment on an older posting on Julieta Venegas that merits its own posting...
I just stumbled on to Ximena Sariñana and thought of this exchange. You can check out Ximena's site http://www.ximenamusic.com/ which is more prominently displaying her recent English cross over, but she's also got one called "Mediocre" on youtube that's bien suave:

Of Lupe Velez, Celebrity as Deity, and More: An Interview with Russell Brand | via Boingboing.net

"Lupe Icon" by Guillermo
Nericcio García

digital source
In "the hardest to read"* chapter in Tex[t]-Mex, the forth chapter on Lupe Vélez entitled, "Lupe Vélez Regurgitated; or, Jesus's Kleenex: Cautionary, Indigestion-Inspiring Ruminations on "Mexicans" in "American" Toilets," I play with the idea of celebrities in the early 20th century as newly minted "saints," with la Lupe a kind of early 20th century martyr--of no little assistance in this vein are the findings of Jeffrey F. Hamburger on the vera ikon or "Veronica" (that scene in the new testament, immortalized in the stations of the cross, "station 6", where Jesus leaves his face on a "Veronica's" handkerchief, aka, the first snapshot).

You can see this idea reappear, with post-modern trappings, in this compelling interview with Russell Brand on boingboing.
